from gas per unit are higher than for grid electric so ideally  As more renewables have come online and coal power stations have been closed, the emissions from grid electric have reduced to 0.140 kgCO2e/kwh in 2020 whilst it is 0.184 kg/CO2e for gas. This makes it difficult to get rid of gas central heating although heat pumps which are more efficient than out dated storage heaters. Heat pumps are expensive to install and need regular maintenance so there is now an alternative - far infrared heaters.  They are easy to install and require no maintenance so can be an interesting solution so although they use more energy than heat pumps, they can be an useful solution especially when used in energy efficient houses and/or with solar panels.
